Just Listening:
Ethics and Therapy is a series of responses to a wide range
of questions put to us by Bob Mullan, editor of R.D. Laing's
last interviews (with Bob) in the book Mad to be Normal. In
some ways our discussions present a sequel to this, a glimpse
of life after Laing or, in other words, how the tradition of
existential-phenomenological psychotherapy, embodied by Laing,
developed and blossomed as ethical therapeutic practice.
Our book speaks from this development. It is an edited version
of our conversations with Bob that attempts to keep to a
conversational tone while at the same time be readable and grammatical.
The chapters follow the order of our meetings and deal with
major issues in the theory and practice of ethically oriented
therapeutics. To a great extent, we consider this first work
provisional and primarily in the service of opening dialogue.

Steve and Leon, both native New Yorkers, are practicing
psychotherapists who worked closely with R.D. Laing in London.
One a philosopher, the other a physician and psychiatrist,
they have been provoked and inspired by eastern and western
ethical teachings and have developed their own ethical approach
to practice. Their style is intelligent, quirky and conversational.
You are invited to join with them to share your ethical and
relational perplexities and to experience the potential of
Just Listening to heal.
The ethical relation opens the heart and offers a radical
old/new therapeutic approach.
Just Listening is an additional string on anyone's bow.
It is for practitioners of/in the healing arts as well as
for would be practitioners of the art of living and heart
wisdom. Do order a copy of the book from this site and post
your questions and responses in our Discussion Group. We would
also welcome your reviews.
